Our Commitment to One Another

The Convergent Catholic Communion is a small, geographically dispersed body. Our bishops serve bivocationally, and our Connexions rely on shared responsibility rather than constant central oversight. This document outlines what clergy should expect from the Communion and what the Communion expects in return.

What Clergy Should Expect

  1. Sacramental Oversight: Your bishop or eparch provides sacramental, pastoral, and disciplinary oversight in accordance with our Constitution and Canons. Oversight is consistent but not constant.

  2. Formation and Continuing Education: You will receive opportunities for ongoing formation, Connexional instruction, and theological enrichment.

  3. Rhythms of Connexional Life: Expect quarterly Connexional gatherings, yearly clergy-wide meetings or retreats, and periodic formation modules. Participation strengthens the community we share.

  4. Clear Communication: Major decisions, policy changes, and required actions will be communicated openly. Response time from bishops may vary due to bivocational ministry.

  5. A National Communion, Not a Local Parish: Your spiritual, emotional, and relational support must be rooted in your local community. The Communion supplements local ministry; it does not replace it.

What the Communion Expects of Clergy

  1. Active Local Ministry: Clergy are expected to serve in a local parish, mission, chaplaincy, outreach ministry, or recognized pastoral setting.

  2. Regular Communication: Maintain contact with your bishop or eparch. Silence creates confusion. Communication protects trust.

  3. Participation in Connexional Life: Attend Connexional meetings, clergy convocations, and the General Assembly whenever possible.

  4. Alignment with the Communion’s Identity: Respect our sacramental theology, inclusive commitments, Connexional polity, and shared mission.

  5. Responsible Stewardship: Support the Communion as you are able, participate in formation, and uphold the standards of clerical life.
