Re:Vatican's document "On Human Dignity”

As Convergent Catholics, we find that the concerns raised by Dignity USA regarding the Vatican's document "On Human Dignity” deeply resonates with our own views on the matter. Although we may not always see eye-to-eye with our friends, Dignity USA, on this occasion, their overall critique is absolutely correct. They have said:

“The Vatican document “On Human Dignity” undermines its purpose by undermining the integrity and human rights of transgender and nonbinary people, along with those making decisions about whether and how to expand their families, says Dignity USA, the world’s oldest organization of [Roman] Catholics working for justice, equality, and full inclusion in the church and society.”

We could not agree more that the Vatican's"Statement On Human Dignity" falls short of its intended purpose by neglecting the dignity and human rights of transgender and nonbinary individuals, as well as those navigating decisions about expanding their families. This failure is particularly evident in its treatment of surrogacy, where the document equates this practice with a grave violation of human dignity.

Surrogacy, while it may have its complexities, is often an act of profound love and dignity on the part of all involved. It is misleading and unjust to equate it with human trafficking, as the Vatican's statement implies. Such a characterization overlooks the genuine intentions and mutual respect present in many surrogacy arrangements.

Furthermore, the Vatican's stance on gender theory reveals a troubling lack of understanding and compassion towards LGBTQIA individuals. By dismissing the validity of gender diversity and denying the existence of nonbinary and intersex individuals, the Vatican perpetuates harmful stereotypes and erases the lived experiences of countless people.

Additionally, the Vatican's treatment of sex change fails to recognize the inherent dignity of transgender individuals. These procedures are often essential for transgender individuals to align their physical bodies with their gender identity and live authentically. To dismiss such procedures as threats to dignity is both insensitive and uninformed.

As pastors, we feel a deep sense of empathy for those who have been hurt or marginalized by the Vatican's rhetoric. It is our firm belief that every person, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and love within the Catholic Church and society at large.

For those who feel alienated by the Vatican's stance, we want to remind you that there are alternative expressions of Catholicism that embrace inclusivity and diversity. Independent and inclusive Catholic communities exist around the world, offering spaces of welcome and affirmation for all individuals, regardless of who they are or who they love.

Finally, we reaffirm our solidarity with LGBTQIA+ individuals and affirm their inherent dignity and worth. May we continue to strive towards a Church and world where all are embraced and celebrated for who they are.
